Dean's Message

Dr. R.Philip Sridhar
Dean i/c Don Bosco College of Agriculture,

Agriculture in India is the most crucial factor for ensuring food and nutritional security, sustainable development and for the alleviation of poverty. Major industries of our country depend on agriculture for their raw materials. It is the key sector in India for generating employment opportunities for the vast majority of the population, particularly in rural areas. India is among the largest producers of the vegetables and fruits in the world. India has enormous potential as an exporter of agricultural commodities ranging from mushrooms to flowers, spices, cereals, oil seeds and vegetables. Agriculture is no longer practiced by rule of thumb. Instead, it has become highly scientific, sophisticated and mechanized and consequently very profitable too.

Following are major career areas on the field of agriculture: Agricultural research, Agro- business, Agro industry, Agricultural education, Services in agriculture, Banking, Farming, etc. Basic training in agriculture is offered as a bachelor’s degree course of four years duration. In order to meet the growing food and industrial demand, the government requires quality agricultural officers, researchers and administrative personnel. With this in mind Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has granted affiliation to limited private agricultural colleges.

Don Bosco College of Agriculture, Research and Rural Development, Sagayathottam is one such institute affiliated to TNAU which has been permitted to admit students to B.Sc (Ag) degree programme from 2014-15. This college situated near the border areas of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Vellore districts and Andhra Pradesh state will help in imparting quality agricultural education.
